--- WESTERN MARYLAND RAIL TRAIL ---
If you have a bike or roller blades and want to feel like a Western Maryland Rail Road train, try this speedy pleasant 22 mile asphalt, relatively flat trail. The trail was designed for wheelchairs. It is a distance from population centers, and is not crowded. It has been rated as one of the top 12 rails to trails for viewing fall foliage.
The section east of Hancock is sandwiched between I-70 and the C &O Canal and the Potomac River. The section retains its beauty despite its proximity to I-70. The section west of Hancock is free of I-70. It is more elevated, affording views of the Potomac, with the best spot found at the ruins of the Round Top Cement Works (Mile 13).
Since the Rail Trial parallels the C&O Canal, you may alternate between them using the numerous access points. Note, the C&O is not paved. To reach the trail, take Exit 12 from I-70 to Md 56, or Exit 3 to Hancock. While in Hancock, try Hepburn Orchard Fruit Market and Weaver’s Restaurant and Bakery on Main Street.
The trail will connect with the Great Allegheny Trail to Pittsburgh.
