--- DAM NO. 3 TO BRUNSWICK ---
They are a required even for folks floating in inner tubes, plus, the police do issue citations. This section contains the Potomac's first whitewater since it headwaters. Even with all of the rocks, it is navigable except during an extreme draught. The ruins of Dam No. 3 are runable through several breaches. You may avoid a run through the dam, by putting in below the Dam where Sandy Hook Rd. meets Harpers Ferry Rd. (See Direction B of Dargans Bend) From Dam No 3, the following 1 1/2 miles, takes you through "The Needles", an intricate, run. If the river is high, this area can be dangerous, in which case, go do something else.
At Harpers Ferry, the Shenandoah River joins the Potomac, and at times, doubles the flow. A half mile from the confluence are the bouncy "Whitehorse Rapids." More fun.
To reach Brunswick, take US 340 to Md.17, to the rail station, and over the C&O Canal.
Well, now you have glimpse of the Upper Potomac, as I know it. Have a fun paddle.
